Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Automation Engineer will assist in the development of customer systems that incorporate machine vision, automation and mechanical assemblies, as well as play a major role in taking the finished design through component manufacture, system assembly/testing, and customer installation. This experienced individual will be comfortable working to deadlines, collaborating with other team members and vendors, and be creative when it comes to finding solutions to design issues. Additionally, a core job function will include design support for VAIA 3D printing services.
Essential Job Functions
- Architect and design electrical and mechanical controls for automated systems including all schematics.
- Program and integrate components including PLC, robots, safety circuits into overall system designs.
- Work with the software development team to integrate overall system automation with the HMI and customer site systems as required.
- Work with engineering, software, and sales teams to develop machinery vision integration solutions, including “Deep Learning” software applications.
- Develop 3D system assembly models of mechanical, electromechanical, and control components.
- Perform on-site work at customer sites to gather information to enable the development of a model of site features, machinery, equipment, and systems as input to the system design process.
- Create or oversee the creation of comprehensive drawing packages of the complete system and subcomponent design to enable full manufacture and assembly of all components.
- Provide design support for VAIA 3D printing services.
- Review detailed drawings and schematics completed by designers or design contractors and provide instruction and input for improvement or correction.
- Participate in and/or supervise system installations and integration at customer sites.
- Participate in the selection and oversight of vendors and subs for component purchase and manufacture
- Participate in and sometimes lead customer project design reviews and other meetings, as required.
- Provide input during system assembly and test to ensure correct system functionality and operation.
- Maintain the design archive and database in accordance with standard company procedures.

Successful Candidate Will:
- Be creative and have good problem-solving capability with regard to mechanical/control system design
- Be able to conceptualize solutions to complex issues
- Have strong customer-facing and communication skills both verbal and written
- Have experience with machinery vision software and applications
- Have some 3D modeling and layout experience
- Have experience creating and leading PowerPoint presentations
- Be self-motivated with drive, enthusiasm, and commitment and ability to work on projects autonomously
- Be interested in new and a quick study on new technology and concepts
- Be comfortable working on multiple concurrent projects as part of a cross-functional team
- Enjoy working with a small team in a high energy environment
- Be comfortable with up to 20% travel
Desired Experience:
- 2-3 years of prior mechanical design experience
- Knowledge of safety controls, safety regulations, and experience designing safety control systems
- Familiarity with machine vision and prior work in vision and bar code systems design
- Familiarity with “Deep Learning” machinery vision software, like ViDi
- Prior work in HMI design and programming
- Knowledge of common electronic communications and networks (serial, Ethernet, Ethernet/IP)
- Experience with AC, DC, servo, and stepper motor control systems
- Control panel and machine wiring
- Experience with SolidWorks design software
Prerequisite Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- 1-2 years of PLC/HMI experience with knowledge of Allen Bradley PLCs (MicroLogix, CompactLogix, ControlLogix, SLC, etc.). Experience with other PLC’s a plus: Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron
- Prior robot programming, preferably Fanuc and ABB
